Great Books for the Fall

Home

This Fall, we have a bountiful harvest of audiobooks. There are many new releases from some of our favorite authors in all of the various genres. Here is just a small sample. Hope to see you in the store. Enjoy.

Mystery Vince Flynn, continues his successful series starring CIA operative Mitch Rapp in a thriller involving counter-terrorism with the destruction of an Iranian nuclear weapons facility. Read by master narrator George Guidall, Protect and Defend releases this month.

The team from The Collectors and The Camel Club is back again for another bestseller by DavidBaldacci. In Stone Cold, the team meets their greatest threat. This title is read by Ron McLarty and releases in November.

Some other mystery releases coming soon include, Patricia Cornwell’s next Kay Scarpetta adventure, Book of the Dead, James Patterson’s latest in the Alex Cross series, Double Cross, J.D. Robb’s Creation in Death, and a new Clive Cussler, The Chase.

Finally, to wrap up mysteries, if you are a Sue Grafton fan and have been diligently following her alphabet mysteries from A if for Alibi to S is for Silence, you have waited 2 years to find out what is going to happen to Kinsey Millhone. December will bring the release of T is for… Terror, Trouble, Talking Books?? Come into the store and check it out!

Fiction In 1989, master storyteller Ken Follett wrote his best selling book of all time, Pillars of the Earth. Set in the 12th century, this historical novel centered on the building of a cathedral and the hundreds of lives it affected. The highly anticipated sequel, World Without End, has just released with a simultaneous CD release of Pillars of the Earth. Both are wonderfully narrated by John Lee. Although both books are long (over 35 hours each), I have these on my reading list!

Patricia Wood’s debut novel Lottery, stars Perry Crandall, who has an IQ of 76, but is not retarded, as he'll have you know: his IQ would need to be less than 75 for that, and he knows the difference even if others may not. The story is both funny and heartwarming.

The Lovely Bones, is one of the most rented audiobooks at All Ears. Author Alice Sebold, has just released her second novel, Almost Moon. Other new releases in fiction include the lastest from Alexander McCall Smith, Love Over Scotland (44 Scotland Street series), a new novel by Tom Perrotta (Little Children), The Abstinence Teacher, and Away, by Amy Bloom.

Finally, I highly recommend Ann Patchett’s (author of Bel Canto) latest book, Run. I loved this book from the beginning to the end and it will probably end up on my list of top ten audiobooks of the year.

Non-Fiction Pulitzer Prize winning author Joseph Ellis has a new book releasing this month, American Creation: Triumphs and Tragedies at the Founding of the Republic. Another title to recommend is Alan Greenspan’s new memoir, The Age of Turbulence. It has received many good reviews and had quite a bit of publicity.

Bill Bryson’s new book, Shakespeare: the World as Stage is bound to be a best seller. One of last year’s holiday hits was You on a Diet. This year will showcase, You Staying Young: the Owner’s Manual for Extending Your Warranty¸ by Michael Roizen and Mehmet Oz.

Business A couple of new titles to consider for listening to in January when they release are Stand and Deliver: The Dale Carnegie Method to Public Speaking by Dale Carnegie and Wealth Magnet: Principles of Wealth Attraction by Dolf de Roos.

Young Adult Calling all Alex Rider fans! We have 2 more books from the series, Point Blank, and the latest release, Ark Angel (yes, believe it or not, the series does NOT end with Scorpia! How does Alex survive?  You’ll have to listen and find out…). Because Alex Rider has been so popular, we will be getting Anthony Horowitz’s The Power of Five series.

Some other great Young Adult releases include Elsewhere, by Gabrielle Zevin, A Crooked Kind of Perfect, by Linda Urban, Gennifer Choldenko’s novel If a Tree Falls at Lunch Period (I just love that title!), and Airman by Eoin Colfer.

Childrens Peter and the Starcatchers has always been a surefire recommendation for children and adults. The final installment in this trilogy, Peter and the Secret of Rundoon, releases this month, featuring, of course, the talented Jim Dale as narrator.

Some other exciting books coming to the childrens section include Gail Carson Levine’s Fairest, and a new book by one of my favorite children’s authors, Sharon Creech, The Castle Corona.
